Short statement of expert

by Gabriel O’ Riordan ,

Head of Scientific Support at CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Former President of European Biosafety Association.

The European Biosafety Association (EBSA) establishes and communicates best biosafety and biosecurity practices amongst its members and beyond. It encourages dialogue and discussions on developing issues and represents the collective interests of its members. EBSA influences and supports emerging legislation and standards, with the objective of ensuring the prevention of harm to people or the environment from biological materials. EBSA also raises awareness outside of the community to increase knowledge about biosafety.

During my presidency from 2017 until 2019, it was an honour to represent the EBSA members. My priority was to increase transparency of the activities and workings of the association in the interest of all members. My second priority was to recruit new members in new regions and from new areas of expertise. Here we also supported the creation of new networks and associations, thereby spreading the message and of biosafety widely. Furthermore the EBSA website has been further developed with many varied but important documents and links into a highly valuable resource for the biosafety community. EBSA cooperates closely with other biosafety associations, regionally and internationally, and will continue with this in the future.
